Fiona Hyslop MSP Urges Vigilance Against Drink Spiking Over Festive Season

As the Christmas and New Year celebrations approach, Fiona Hyslop MSP for the Linlithgow Constituency is calling on residents across West Lothian to stay alert and help tackle the growing concern of drink spiking in pubs, clubs, and festive events.

The warning follows an update the Scottish Government, Police Scotland, health professionals, victims’ organisations, universities, and the night-time economy to ensure a robust and coordinated response to spiking incidents.

Fiona commented,

“We all deserve to enjoy a safe night out, but sadly with spiking on the rise in bars and nightclubs across Scotland, we must be vigilant, know how to spot perpetrator behaviour and look out for each other on nights out.

“I am pleased to see action such as high visibility patrols in nightlife areas from Police Scotland, clear campaign messaging and bystander training for venue staff, being rolled out this winter.

“The message is clear, never leave your drink unattended, don’t accept drinks from strangers, if a drink tastes odd, alert staff immediately, and if you suspect spiking alert staff and call Police Scotland on 101 (or 999 in an emergency).

“It is important we follow the advice and look out for each other on nights out so we can all enjoy a safe social time over Christmas and New Year.”

  • National surveys show 1.8% of UK adults believe they were spiked in the past year, rising to 3% among 18–34-year-olds. Yet only 23% report incidents to police.
  • Spiking most often occurs in bars (41%), social events (26%), and nightclubs (25%).
